What is Direct Upper Lip Excisional Enhancement surgery?
Direct upper lip excisional enhancement is a procedure in which a strip of skin is removed from the upper lip just beneath the nasal sill and extending to the creases laterally. By removing this skin it elevates the vermilion (red part) of the lip and shortens the upper lip, thereby giving a more youthful-appearing lip.
Similarly, an excision at the lower lip placed directly at the vermilion border which takes a strip of white skin 2.5 to 3 centimeters long and 3 to 5 millimeters wide, centered at the midline of the lip, will roll out the lower lip creating a thicker "pouting" lip, giving a youthful appearance.
It is also possible to perform an excision and transfer of a small portion of skin at the lateral corners of the lips to directly elevate them. This transforms the corners of the lips which are down-turning with age from an angry, scowling frown into a subtle smile at rest.
